Actions: Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic. It is a semisynthetic derivative of tetracycline that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial proteins by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome that prevents the RNA coupling of transfer and rearrangement of amino acids to 50S subunit. Doxycycline penetrates the bacteria to inhibit the protein synthesis and, once inside, blocks the acceptor site of the messenger RNA-ribosome complex, thereby preventing the xation of the aminoacyl transfer RNA. Because the penetration is dependent on an active transport process, this is favored in doxycycline due to its high liposolubility and this allows it to pass directly through the bilipid layer. This property is also the main responsible of its greater antimicrobial activity. It has also been described that tetracyclines can uncouple the phosphorylation chain oxidation of bacteria and produce membrane alterations producing an escape of the intracellular components of the microorganism.
